Asylum seekers to industrialized countries up 20 per cent



In its latest annual Asylum Levels & Trends in Industrialized Countries Report, UNHCR noted that 441,300 people claimed asylum in the 44 industrialized countries in Europe, North America, in addition to Australasia (a region that includes Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and North East Asia)  covered by the study during 2011. 

This represented a 20 per cent increase from 2010, when 368,000 claims were submitted.

The report shows that most of the requests received by the South Europe rose by 87 percent to about 67 thousand applications; most of them came from come from North Africa.
