The Islamic Chamber has organized a “4-Day Workshop on Coffee Processing” in Kampala, Republic of Uganda on 5-8 October 2009 in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and Uganda National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (UNCCI) and with the attendance of Ms. Attiya Nawazish Ali, Assistant Secretary General (Coordination), Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI).

The objective of the workshop was to build capacity and to facilitate value addition for coffee entrepreneurs, so that they may sharpen their skills and knowledge in the production, processing, roasting, packaging for value addition. Emphasis was put on transfer of knowledge, best practices and experiences on coffee processing industry, helping the participants for better and efficient utilization of their resources.
It was attended by 57 trainees from Republic of Uganda, in addition to four Member Countries namely Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Yemen.
The Republic of Uganda was selected for organizing the said workshop as it is one of the leading coffee producers not only in African continent, but also in OIC Countries.
On the inauguration of the Workshop, H.E. Eng. Gagawala Wambuzi, the Minister of State for Trade emphasized the significance of the subject of the Workshop and thanked the organizers for choosing Uganda as a venue of this important workshop. He also underlined the need for the developing countries to learn how to add value to their production, so as to benefit from their own natural resources. Thus he also called on the private sector to utilize their potentials and make the most of their resources. He then declared the Workshop open.
Ms. Attiya Nawazish Ali, Assistant Secretary General (Coordination), Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) addressed the opening session and underlined the importance of the subject of the Workshop, as a means of assisting the private sector to add value to their products. She thanked the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Government of the Republic Uganda for patronizing the program and their kind support, as well as for their hospitality and warm reception to foreign delegates. She also thanked the Islamic Development Bank, for their generous financial support extended towards the organization of this Workshop.
The four day Workshop was concluded by Honorable Aggrey Bagiire, Minister of State for Agriculture, Republic of Uganda. He appreciated the efforts taken by the Islamic Chamber, the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Islamic Development Bank for organizing this Workshop. He underlined the importance of value addition as means for strengthening the economies of the developing countries and particularly those of the OIC. In the implementation of the recommendations, he assured the support of the Government of the Republic of Uganda. The Meeting then concluded with thanks to the Government of the Republic of Uganda and the Organizers.
